Whether you fancy a cocktail overlooking the city or a pint while checking out some new-age tunes, Budapest has something for everybody. Here are my top 5 bars in Budapest.
New to the scene bar Leo can be found on the verdant rooftop of the Clark Hotel and is worth a visit for the panoramic views alone, although their cocktails aren’t half bad either. In fact, they’ll “knock your socks off”, to put it simply. Their bartenders’ unbridled creativity gives way to an enticing variety of concoctions – you must try the Viva Leo. On top of all this, they have what seems to be a never-ending liquor list as well as an impressive selection of beers and international wines. Owned by the team behind KIOSK and Babel, this place was always going to be a hit.
TIP: Book for the 20th of August, St. Stephen’s day, for a great view of the fireworks over the River.

Clark Adam tér 1., 1013 Budapest, Hungary
Hidden away in one of the side streets of District 7, behind a somewhat unassuming door, is the fabulous Boutiq’ Bar. This speakeasy-like hangout is home to master craftsmen whose sole duty is to give you a good time, whether it’s through one of their unconventional, but ultimately delicious, cocktails or just a friendly chat. The décor is minimalist yet quirky, and invites expats, locals and tourists, creating a lively atmosphere. They’re open till 2am on the weekends and is always a great spot for “one for the road”. Head here if you fancy something out of the ordinary drinks-wise.

Budapest, Paulay Ede u. 5, 1061 Hungary
Enjoy the high life at 360 Bar – a fantastic roof terrace which offers cocktails, food and live DJs too. Their 360 views of Budapest are second to none, which means that this once private event space is now open to the public due to (understandable) demand. Though they charge 1000 HUF for entry (about £2.50), it is well worth it. I haven’t personally tried the food as I went for the music and the cocktails, but they were great along with the buzzing atmosphere.

Who doesn’t love a glass of wine in the sky? St. Andrea’s vineyards and wine are highly respected within the very competitive wine industry of Hungary, as well as among internationals. They match wine with your mood, so we suggest while here you try the ‘happy’ wine (Boldogsagos). This place is an excellent spot for some pre-dinner drinks as you watch the sun go down, but if you get hungry, you need not leave as they also have a tantalising menu chock-full of Hungarian and European dishes.

Converted from an old factory into a self-proclaimed ‘cultural reception space’, Szimpla has become one of Budapest’s most beloved spots. The quirky, informal interior is full of knick-knacks, looks like the inner mind of a mad-man and is a great place for a (free) gig and a pint. They’re on an incredible journey to make Hungary’s environment more ‘liveable and human-friendly’ by promoting sustainable living, providing space for non-profit organisations and nurturing creative talents in the form of music, theatre and cinema, which you can come weekly.
