5 of my Favourite Restaurants in Tulum, Mexico

Where to eat in Tulum? The first time I visited Tulum was nearly 20 years ago but back then I could not recommend any of these places simply as they didn’t exist. Needless to say, it was a very different affair compared to 2019. Even the past 4-5 years has bought major changes to this mini beach town. Much of the changes caused by the continuous opening of new restaurants. The following places are a mixture of old and new, and I know from personal experience that each of them is amazing.

1. HARTWOOD

Address; Carretera Tulum Boca Paila 7.6Km,

77780 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico http://www.hartwoodtulum.com/

Hartwood is a true pillar of Tulum beach. If you haven’t heard about Hartwood, you may have had your head buried in the sand for the last couple of years. Owners Eric and Mya left New York City in 2010 and opened Hartwood. The menu changes daily based on the sea and land have given offerings each day.

Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday 6 – 10 p.m. for dinner and they are closed during low season (September and October). They welcome both walk-ins and reservations, but if you want to avoid lengthy waiting and queuing, make a reservation.

2. ARCA

Address: Av. Boca Paila, Tulum, Q.R., Mexico . https://arcatulum.com/

Arca is the new Hartwood, giving it a run for its money, and it’s right next door. This rustic, open-air restaurant in the jungle, lit with candles and twinkling lights, serves Mexican cuisine using fresh local ingredients. If you’re dining with children, they are happy to create something kid-friendly. On the adult end, one of Arca’s specialities is creative, unique cocktails.

3. WILD

Address: Calle 0 0″N, Jordán, Empalme, Q.R., Mexico http://www.wildtulum.com/

Wild pays tribute to the diverse landscape of the Mexican Caribbean. With a truly unique design concept influenced by the surrounding Mexican Caribbean landscape, a farm to table inspired menu with a Yucatan-meets-Caribbean twist. The restaurant uses fresh produce and ingredients from local producers, featuring a variety of meats, seafood, and local vegetables cooked with a wood fire oven and grill.

4. POSADA MARGHERITA

Address: Km. 4.5, Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila, Tulum, 77780 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Posada Margherita is a true beach restaurant in every sense. Great for breakfast, lunch and dinner as it is open daily from 7am till 10pm. A true Italian affair with homemade pasta dishes and a great pizza shack right by the entrance. The menu hasn’t been changed for at least 6 years, but why “fix something if it ain’t broken”? Tip; they also have amazing gelato and fresh fruit juices to die for.

5. LOS AQUACHILES

Address: Chetumal-Cancun, Centro, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico https://www.facebook.com/Aguachiles.mx/

Los Aquachiles is your every day, local, cheap and cheerful tacos and ceviche. You can’t go wrong with this place. If tacos are your thing, don’t look any further. You can close your eyes and just point to anything on the menu, you won’t be disappointed. They also have branches in Playa Del Carmen and Cancun, but I much prefer the Tulum one. Bear in mind that this place is in Tulum town and not on the beach road.
