The Place

Mama San is one of my top three favourite restaurants in Bali. God knows how many times I’ve eaten there, especially as they’ve got a pretty handy takeaway menu too.

This incredibly cool South East Asian restaurant is set over two levels. There’s an amazing bar on each floor so you could just pop in for a cocktail.

Except, once you see that food coming out of the kitchen, there’s no way you won’t want to sit down and eat. So book in advance and come hungry.

The Neighbourhood

Seminyak. Ten minutes’ walk from the One Eleven Hotel. And not far from my other favourite Bali haunts. If Mama San doesn’t fit the bill, it’s always Sisterfields for brunch, Sardine for seafood and Merah Putih for the most perfect Indonesian cuisine.

A Good Shout for…

Lunch or dinner. Its buzzy atmosphere makes it a great place to enjoy with a group of mates.

The Best Bits

  • The interior, which feels like you’ve walked onto a film set. Taking inspiration from the 1920s, colonial-era Shanghai, it’s all stylish vintage glamour with leather Chesterfields and marble mah-jong tables.
  • The food. Dumplings, spring rolls, steamed buns, tempura, siew mai. It’s South East Asian cuisine with next level flavours and presentation.
  • Feeling you get a lot for your money. Prices at Mama San are mid-range. But the quality of the food and service go way beyond.
  • Quick Tip: If you like the sound of Mama San, you should check out chef Will Meyrick’s other Bali restaurants – award-winning Sarong or newly opened and super-stylish Billy Ho.
